Witch Fire

by Anya Bast

Pros: Great world building
Cons: Characters are kinda perfect

Anya Bast has created a fully developed world with this series, with a very reasonable premise. What we think of as “witches” are based upon the real thing, who have been hiding amongst us for centuries. Having been persecuted in the past, they are careful to hide their existence and their magical activities. As you might expect, there’s a good group (The Coven) and a bad group (The Duskoff).

Witches, as it turns out, come in four flavors – Fire, Water, Earth and Air. In this series, Air witches are the most powerful and the most rare, which I found to be a very creative and well thought out direction for the author to take. The heroine – Mira – is a very powerful air witch, but completely unaware of it.

Enter Jack – a strong fire witch sent to protect her until she learns to control her powers so that the Duskoff don’t sacrifice her for their own evil purposes.

What happens when you blow on a fire? It flares up, of course! That’s exactly what happens here when Jack and Mira are forced to spend some time alone together. They cannot resist the pull and quickly enter into a mutually satisfying affair, which develops into something much deeper, as they teach Mira how to use her powers and thwart the designs of the Duskoff.

I found both of these characters quite sympathetic and engaging, if just a little too perfect to be real. But then, who wants to read about the boring people-next-door? Jack is excellently drool-worthy, which makes it ever so gratifying when he turns his undivided attentions upon Mira. Exactly what we all dream of!

Steamy bedroom scenes contribute well to this very good story. I enjoyed this one quite well and will be looking forward to seeing what happens next in the sequel, Witch Blood.
